Baking powder is an arid chemical leavening agent, a combination of a bicarbonate or carbonate and a weak acid, which is typically used for lightening the texture and increasing the volume of baked goods. Making your own, homemade baking powder is very easy and simple. Here is the recipe:
Ingredients (to make one tablespoon baking powder):
- 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon cream of tart and 1 teaspoon baking soda.
- Mix until thoroughly incorporated and use right away.
In case you need some more – just double the recipe. In case you don’t want to use it immediately – simple add 1 teaspoon cornstarch and store in an airtight container.
This homemade baking powder is ideal for muffins and quick bread, rather than waffles or certain pancakes. It’ll still work for waffles and pancakes, but you have not as much of leeway when it comes to allowing the batter sit while you cook.
Enjoy!
